    Little League

A recreational league offered in the metro area for all youth regardless of ability or skill level. Leagues are offered in the area according to boundaries dictated by National Little League.

Leagues AAU Sanctioned Developmental Spring League

Some players, ages 7U – 14U, have expressed an interest in playing in the Little League program, while also wanting the opportunity to play more games and develop into a more competitive player. To accommodate this interest, AAU sanctions a developmental league for interested teams, with games played on Sunday afternoon (5 weeks ... starting in mid-April). ....... Note: most age groups play doubleheaders so the league will have 10 game schedule. For information on this league, please contact Iowa AAU ---> parmenterN. More insight into the Iowa AAU Baseball program

Iowa AAU is a non-profit multi-sport youth organization providing opportunity for youth to participate in various sports.  Fees are only adequate enough to cover expenses of administering the youth sports programs.  The organization is all volunteer operated.  No Iowa AAU individual volunteer gets paid or profits from youth athletic programs.

Accordingly, Iowa AAU is an enabling organization.  Their mission is to assist in organizing youth athletic leagues and competitions so that Iowa youth have a chance to participate, have fun and learn a sport in the process.

As an enabling organization, Iowa AAU is a customer driven organization.  Iowa AAU seeks to provide what its customers desire.  Iowa AAU customers are the athletes, coaches and families resident in Iowa.

There is one annual AAU individual membership fee (youth $12, adult coach $14).  This fee applies for all AAU sports during the AAU year of September 1 through August 31.  A player that wrestles or plays basketball in the winter months, for example, will already have a membership for baseball and need not pay a second time.  Once a member, the fee covers participation in Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League, Memorial Day weekend tournaments, State Tournaments as well as participation in the many other Iowa AAU Baseball events during the season.

Iowa AAU has provided an Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League for many years.  Many times this program is referred to as the Iowa AAU Baseball Developmental League or the Iowa AAU Baseball Sunday Afternoon Spring League.

The Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League program in place the last several years was designed in response to the wishes of the participating coaches.  It is possible that customers will request something a little different in 2009.  More likely, there will be a group of coaches seeking a program in 2009 that is similar to the program effective in prior years.  In addition, there may be another group of coaches who may be seeking a little different program in 2009.  Given sufficient interest, Iowa AAU Baseball will attempt to meet the needs of both groups.

For example, the Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League could be designed for developmental play or for competitive play or there could be two separate leagues, one for each of these.  As another example, the Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League could be closed base or be open base or there could be two separate leagues, one for each of these.  The possibilities are endless and are driven by the customers.

In recent years, the Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League has been a closed base, developmental program designed to supplement the Little League programs in central Iowa.  However, note that Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League participants may or may not also be playing Little League Baseball.

The Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League program that was effective in 2008 and several prior years is noted below.  There are also a few comments about changes that would probably be needed for program designs that were new in 2009 relative to 2008.

Separate leagues are established for each individual age from 6U to 15U.  Unfortunately, there is often insufficient interest at ages 6U, 7U and 8U to form leagues.  Also, due to limited number of teams, the age 14U and 15U teams are frequently merged into a single league.

Teams enter Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League ALREADY FORMED.  Iowa AAU does not have the resources to place individuals on teams.

Each team plays two games on each of five consecutive Sunday afternoons beginning in mid-April and ending prior to Memorial Day weekend.  No Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League games are scheduled on Easter Sunday. Games are Sunday afternoons because the host facilities are operated by Little League programs and their fields are usually available at no other times than Sunday afternoons.

All games for a single particular age group are scheduled at one host location with only the following exception.  Depending upon the number of participating teams at the teen ages (13U, 14U, 15U), it may be necessary to schedule games at more than one host location.

When possible, the Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League begins on the Sunday six weeks prior to Memorial Day weekend in order to leave one extra Sunday between the end of the regular five week season and Memorial Day weekend for rain out make up games or for an end of season practice tournament.  Details for this extra Sunday are developed exclusively by the coaches and host facility personnel without Iowa AAU involvement.

The coaches establish the rules to be used during Spring League.  If the intent is DEVELOPMENTAL for both players and teams, there are no league standings and no championship.  In fact, game scores may not even be maintained.  Substitution is relatively free of restrictions.  Pitching limitations are intentionally restrictive so that teams must develop extra pitchers (and catchers).  All players present for a game are listed in the batting order.  Again, the intent is for everyone to play and get their time in the batting box.  DEVELOPMENT is the key.  (Obviously, if the intent was competitive instead of developmental, rules and other provisions would closely follow those applicable during Iowa AAU Baseball tournament competitions).

The per team entry fee for a DEVELOPMENTAL type league is relatively inexpensive.  Basically the entry fee is ten (games) times the home plate umpire fee plus an AAU Club (team) membership fee (usually $30) and a small Iowa AAU administrative fee.  For example, if the home plate umpire fee is $45 per game, the team entry fee would be about $530 (10 x $45 + $30 + $50).  In a developmental type league, only one paid umpire per game is used and volunteers may be used on the bases if desired by the teams/coaches involved in a particular game.  (In a competitive instead of developmental type league, two umpires per game would likely be required and the per team entry fee in the above example would be $980).

After playing in the Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League, teams are definitely better prepared to play in competitions such as the Iowa AAU Baseball Memorial Day weekend tournaments, State Tournaments as well as participation in the many other Iowa AAU Baseball events during the season.

The CRITICALLY IMPORTANT thing is for teams planning on participating in the Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League to enter soon after the detailed entry information is posted on the Iowa AAU web site (usually in mid-December) and printed in the January edition of the Iowa AAU Baseball newsletter (usually mid-January).  Teams ENTERING EARLY are surveyed to obtain customer input on 2008 league design specifics.  For example, if there is sufficient interest in both developmental and competitive leagues as well as both open and closed base leagues, additional facilities may be necessary and must be obtained very early in the year, months before the beginning of league play.

Please let us know if you have questions or if I have failed to address any specific concerns that your may have about the Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League.  We will try to reflect the answers to any such questions that may arise in future versions of this email.

Thanks for your interest in the Iowa AAU Baseball Spring League.
